About This Project

New Football Stadium of Panathinaikos in Votanikos, Athens

The relocation of the Panathinaikos Stadium formed part of a broader regeneration strategy for the center of Athens, with the objective of establishing a major hub for both professional and amateur sports within a wider urban and recreational development. The architectural design study responded to this ambition by conceiving the stadium as an integrated intervention within an extensive open landscape, combining sports, cultural, and recreational facilities into a unified complex.
Located within the city center on a 178,000 sq.m. site, the stadium is positioned at the intersection of the main road network axes and is conceived as a cultural and urban landmark within a constantly evolving environment. The design responds to the “city dynamic” by establishing a strong relationship between the stadium and its surrounding urban context, while allowing the building to develop its own distinct identity.
The conceptual approach seeks to integrate the different uses within a single architectural “shell,” ensuring both morphological and functional unity while maintaining a clear differentiation between the various activities. Sports facilities and supporting uses interact and overlap to form a cohesive, multifunctional ensemble. At the same time, the stadium’s controlled introversion creates an intense and dynamic atmosphere during sporting events, while maintaining visual and functional connections with the surrounding city.
Designed as a UEFA “Elite” category stadium, the new Panathinaikos Stadium is envisioned as the home of one of Athens’ most historic and successful football clubs, while also serving as a significant architectural, cultural, and urban landmark for the city.
